30mins/ KS 3/4 / 2008 ICT, CAD and CAM are rapidly changing the fashion design industry. With access to one of the UKs top fashion design houses, Coppernob, the programme shows how technology is used at every stage of the design process. Initial design proposals are generated, developed, modelled and communicated using ICT and CAD. Photoshop is used to create and manipulate fabric designs. CAD software is then used to design, grade and cost the garment for manufacture, produce the spec sheet and lay plan, while CAM is used to produce the final sample. The programme also looks at the very latest technological development to hit the textile fashion industry – the 3-D body scanner. It explains how the technology works, looks at the data it collects about body sizes and its applications for High Street retailers and catalogue companies, from size chart development to 2 and 3D pattern generation.
