Entry from: Otavalo, Ecuador Entry Title: “The famous Indian Market” Entry: “Being the slack ass travelers that we admittedly are, we woke up to a blue sky, sunny day and decided that we could not be bothered going to Riobamba to ride on the ‘Devils Nose’ train. We had been reading other travelers blogs and had read many mixed reviews and as we had been on two train trips already we put it in the too hard basket. It was such a nice day, the best we had had yet, that the thought of sitting on a bus for four and a half hours was far from appealing. Plan B came into action and we headed off to the Otavalo markets. Otavalo is the most famous Indian market in Ecuador and is approximately two hours north of Quito. It’s known for it’s textiles, crafts and tourist souvenirs and on Saturdays, the main market day, there is also a small livestock market. As it was a late decision we organized a collectivo taxi which was the cheapest way to get there quickly. We arrived just before 1pm and this worked out to be perfect timing. The tour buses had all departed and it was mostly just locals left. The drive to Otavalo was stunning and it keeps surprising us how mountainous Ecuador is. Driving down into Otavalo was picture perfect, the large Cayambe volcano sweeping down to a lake which looked more like a puddle …
