Install A Programmable Thermostat

Before starting the installation of your thermostat, it is very important to check all the manufacturer’s instructions. Once you are through with all the instructions, you need to stop the power supply to the furnace and air conditioner. Cut power at breaker box or remove the fuse from service panel.

It is a very crucial step that you can not afford to forget. After this, take out the cover of your old thermostat and also unscrew the old mounting plate from the wall. Make sure you are not disconnecting any wire while doing this.

Before you disconnect any of the wire, you should label it. Many times it is seen that with out labeling, people do wrong connections that can prove to be very costly. Once you have labeled the wires, you can disconnect them from the screw terminals.

When you start installing a new unit, you need to thread the wires through your thermostat base. Its base should be level and sits flush with the wall. The holes can be marked with a pencil. You can drill new holes at new locations as per your requirement. Screw the mounting screws into the wall so that its base can be locked. When you tighten the screw, make sure that base is level.

It is a good idea to first consult the wiring diagram of the thermostat manufacturer’s instructions. Next, mount the thermostat to the mounting plate and proceed with wiring. If necessary, use a wire stripper to remove about 1/4 inch of the plastic sheathing. Connect the wires to the screw terminals, matching the letters on the thermostat to the masking tape labels.

Turn the power back on and begin programming the unit. The manufacturer’s instructions should contain the necessary programming information, as each unit is distinct in its programming process.

After installing your thermostat, you need to do some more settings in order to save money. You need to be cautious while programming your unit. Generally a thermostat comes with four different settings- wake, away, evening, night/sleep.

As per your family’s schedule, you can set time for each of these settings. It will help you in making considerable savings. If you are out of your house during daytime then it is advised to set the temperature little low in winters and little higher in summers.
