Melamine-Tainted Eggs From China

ANCHOR: Despite working hard to convince the world that Chinese food is safe, Hong Kong has now found traces of melamine in some eggs imported from China. STORY: The eggs were imported from Chinas northeastern city. Hong Kong asked Beijing earlier this week to investigate how melamine turned up in Chinese chicken eggs. Tests over the weekend detected melamine in eggs, and the contents are nearly twice the legal limit. This news is further blighting the “made in China” label. Beijing egg vendor Mr. Qiu says egg prices have dropped by ten percent. Yet, despite the latest scandal, he says his customers continued to buy eggs. [Mr. Qiu, Egg Vendor]: “We are doing alright these days except that the price has dropped a bit. It is fine. It hasn’t been affected much for the time being.” To make the situation worse, there was a rumor last week in Sichuan that ten thousand tons of tangerines had to be destroyed because of fruit fly. This rumor has cost farmers millions of dollars in lost sales. Sichuan denies the reports, saying only 12 tons have been destroyed and that the situation is under control. Ms. Xiao, a tangerine farmer from Hunan province in central China, says farmers in her region have suffered large losses. [Ms. Xiao, Tangerine Farmer]: “Business is really bad now. It is all because of the fruit flies that hit Sichuan province.
