A stereotype is a popular, but overly simplified, belief about a race, a specific social group, or a certain type of individuals. There are many stereotypes about Chinese. Today, I would like to talk about two stereotypes about Chinese: one: math and two: playing pingpong. Let me talk about math first. In general, if you say “You Chinese are good at math”, I agree. If you say “You Chinese are good at math because you people are smart”. I don’t agree. I tell you why. Two reasons. First, compared with other non-Chinese children, we Chinese children have more opportunities to learn a big number at our early age. I tell you one story to make my point. When I was 5 years old, I remember, one day my mother bought a mirror. It was my first time to see such a magic object. I looked in the mirror, but I was not happy at all with what I saw. My mother asked, “Son, why you look so sad?” I said, “I have a ugly face. My face is so flat. I don’t have blue eyes, I don’t have big nose, I don’t have a big mouth as most Americans do”. My mother replied, ” Son. Why you worry too much? You live among 1.3 billion people who look exactly like you.” Do you see, I learnt a big number, 1.3 billion, when I was only 5. Second, we Chinese children studied very hard. Today I want to show you my daily schedule when I was ten. In China, we also have 24 hours a day. But I studied math for 5 hours, then I went to work in factory for 10 hours, then, came back to have 1 hour break for meal and bathroom …
