Pre planning is the most important step before taking up any plumbing remodeling project. Plumbing is all about piping so the very first thing is to decide is where to run the pipes. Many people usually prefer to use the same old cavities for new plumbing as they are already designed so no effort has to be put in again.

If the new plumbing plans call for changes in the fixture layout, it may be easier to run them up from the basement. For example, instead of running a bathtub drain over floor joists, the drain line can be dropped into the basement and connected to the main drain line beneath the joists.

Never try to cut into the floor joists or support beams as this can be risky and can weaken the whole structure. You should always consult a professional because it is important to follow the local building codes for safety. Below are some useful tips for starting your new plumbing project.

One option is to build a chase wall. It is a false wall that is used to hide plumbing connections. It can be used from floor to ceiling allowing plumbing to run from basement to attic. A wall chase is mostly used for running new vent stacks.

Similar to the chase is the soffit. Instead of running from floor-to-ceiling, a soffit runs across the top of a wall. Inside pipes can be run vertically to accommodate new plumbing.

If you have an unused laundry space, it can be used to run new plumbing pipes. The connections are mostly made in the basement area in this case.

A long piece of pipe can be used to check prospective plumbing routes for any obstructions. Once the route is determined to be adequate, the pipe can be a guide for running larger diameter plumbing. This is easily done by sliding the larger pipe over the guide pipe.

These are just a few different ways to run new plumbing in your home. Remember, it’s always easier to work in open spaces than in tight spots inside walls. And if you are ever uncertain about the legitimacy of a plumbing plan, check with local inspectors and city officials to ensure that everything you planned will be up to code.

Kick off your next revamping campaign by first developing a good idea about your plumbing system since all the other plumbing fragments would directly or indirectly depend on how your plumbing system perceives its associated structure. The plumbing vents, taps, showers, valves etc. should be chosen keeping your plumbing system in mind. If chosen otherwise, some uncalled problems may start to haunt the smooth functioning of your bathroom as well as its affiliated appliances and outlets.

Instead of suffering for a long run, one can straightaway shed some cash to augment the efficient functioning of the plumbing system.

In order to render your bathroom a sound plumbing structure and functioning, you need to identify your bathroom’s plumbing system first. Remember that the associated plumbing components should be installed in agreement with the plumbing system type.

Hence, identifying your bathroom’s plumbing system forms the basis for the selection of other accessories as well. There are generally two types of plumbing systems , one is the high pressure plumbing system and the other one is the low pressure plumbing system. The high pressure systems don’t use a separate cold water tank to supply cold water and instead rely on an automated single unit. Whereas the low pressure systems have separate arrangements for the supply of hot water and cold water.

Once the task of identifying the system is accomplished, go for the related tap type selection. For a high pressure system, a low pressure tap is recommended. However, in case of a low pressure system a high pressure tap is a definite thumbs down since it would not be able to supplement the mechanism of the low pressure system.

A quarter open and close tap offers high pressure as it allows only a quarter turn to stop and resume the water flow. To select the low pressure taps, buy the conventional clockwise/anticlockwise taps. These conventional taps are the popular choice as they correlate well with the high pressure plumbing mode.

In case of unforeseen complications, a contractor/plumber is always handy to call for the assistance. He may also guide you with the related bathroom fittings including the taps, showers, tubs, pipes etc. that you should ideally go for.

Remember that all bathroom plumbing components must always be akin to the overall functioning of the plumbing system and any deviation from this predefined schema would hurt the coherency of the plumbing system.

Scott Rodgers is a noted author who has been writing on the plumbing works since a long time.

A foul smell prevailing in your home indicates a possible problem in the plumbing trap and the associated primer. A trap is a plumbing valve that doesn’t allow sewer gases to escape to the surroundings. The trap primer does the job of allowing water to enter into the trap such that water-seal is maintained in the trap.

The examination of the trap primer is something that finds an easy place in the do-it-yourself plumbing scenario. Instead of making ways for a plumber straightaway, take the job in your own hands.

Commence the project by apprehending the problem and arranging the tools that would be required in the project. These include the basic plumbing tools such as the pipe wrenches, screwdrivers, cutters, hammers etc.

Start the project by acquiring a general perception about the working of the trap and how the trap primer would look once you locate it. Trap primers normally are the intermediate plumbing joints that allow water to go into the trap. Once problem is well apprehended, cut off the water supply from the main valve or the sink drain. Keep the supervision of an expert always in tact. Locate the trap primer by tearing down the drywall or some tiles from the primer’s site. The plumber who fixed it in the past may be consulted to locate the primer. The primer would generally be a small cylinder or a T-bar shaped component.

Dissociate the trap primer from the adjacent pipes with the help of cutters and pipe wrenches. Keep a bucket and a towel handy as leakage may be encountered while removing the primer. Take it to a hardware store and consult the salesperson regarding the new primer. Also ask if connectors and a pipe of some length would be required in order to compensate for the overall length of the pipe in the trap setup.

Now put the new primer in place and solder/glue it well. The connectors as well as the additional pipe is added to the original pipe length. Remember to solder it well in case of a copper pipe.

Test the success of the installation by turning on the water supply to the trap primer. A normal operation of the trap primer and the affiliated components confirm the success of the project. Cement the tiles back on the wall.

As far as the maintenance of the trap primer is concerned, regular inspections are mandatory.

If you’re buying an older house, or making upgrades to your current home, you must think of replacing a standard outlet with a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlet. It has an inbuilt circuit breaker that prevents an electrical shock and also put a stop on shorting of related circuit breaker.

Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, outdoor locations, wet bar locations, unfinished basements, garages and crawl spaces are some places where GFCI outlets are used. In short a prime location for a GFCI outlet is anywhere where water or dampness is an issue.

Fuse plays an important role in preventing a fire in house due to any electrical disorder. However, a GFCI outlet opens its local circuit breaker present inside it and prevents any mishap. One more advantage of a GFCI outlet is that, it prevents the shock in other outlets also that are present in same circuit breaker.

When you work with any electrical device at a place where water flows, chances of electric shock increases as water is a good conductor of electricity. In kitchen and bathroom, installation of GFCI outlet is must. A GFCI outlet will detect an imbalance in current flowing from the hot wire to the neutral and shut off the circuit in that case.

Normally a GFCI outlet has 3 holes in it. Out of these three, one hole present in mid is for ground wire, one with small slit is for neutral wire and one with larger slit is for hot wire. They are very useful for us as they quickly detect any problem and protect us from an accident.

A GFCI constantly monitors the flow of electricity between the two sides. As long as everything is working and stable, there are no problems. But as soon as there is a deviation in the current flow, the GFCI trips out and cuts the flow of electricity.

Installation of a GFCI electrical outlet is not very difficult. You just need to follow some safety precautions before installing a GFCI electrical outlet. Most important is to turn off the circuit you are working on. Secondly, use tools with insulated handles to avoid any shock. After that, follow all the installation steps for properly installing it.

Now, importance of a GFCI outlet must be cleared in your mind. Therefore, replace your standard outlets with GFCI outlets for securing your house. Prefer to do the replacement yourself as a professional electrician will ask for huge money and it’s not so difficult that you can’t do it.

After development of wireless home security systems, the days of wired security systems have come to an end. It is very convenient security device that has made home security very easy. Its installation and operation is quite fast and easy. You need to have proper knowledge of your wireless alarm system working, so that no burglar can break into your house. Following are some useful tips to improve the usability of your wireless home security system.

Before purchasing a home security system, find out how many windows and doors you want to be within the range of your security system. By this you can buy a security system of right size that has required coverage area.

Select a suitable place where you can place your control panel and from where you can easily operate the security system. The place should such that you can easily reach there anytime and in any emergency.

Put the component of security system at every place in the house those are susceptible to robbery so that you can secure all the corners of your house. All the important parts of your house should be in wave range of security system.

If you have a pet at your home than it would be wise to have a pet friendly security system. Otherwise, your security system would become a nuisance for you. An ordinary wireless security system will regularly ring the alarm taking your pet as an intruder.

Cameras can be set up in home to visually monitor the areas of your house. Generally, a typical wireless home security system can accommodate up to 16 cameras. You can also install some microphones which will make the alarm ring in case the noise level crosses a predetermined threshold.

A sound making alarm should not be installed to detect a burglar as it can make him alert by its sound. But you should arrange a system so that either police or you get the alarm for that. To have uninterrupted service of a wireless home security system (to avoid signal clashes between various wireless systems), install it at a place where it can do its work without being disturbed.

Various kind of sensors are available in market like lamp sensors, motion sensors, glass break sensors, smoke detector, panic buttons, voice dialing etc. If you will use all these alarm system along with your wireless security system then you will have an all in one alarm system that will alert you against all the things. It will cost you one time but will give you a lifetime security.

When you make a new house, you install the electric wiring and outlets according to your need, but after some days or years you may feel the need of a fitting or outlet at some other place where you don’t have it. In that case, you either put a new outlet there or move an unused outlet at that place.

Tools and Materials required for moving are: drywall or keyhole saw, Phillips and flat head screwdrivers, cut-in electrical box, 12×3 electrical wiring, wire nuts, blank electrical plate, drill, 1 inch paddle bit, side cutting pliers and wire strippers.

Before starting the work, the first and mandatory thing to do is to cut off the power. For this turn off the breaker which is connected to the outlet you will be working on. You can use a volt meter or a light to test the outlet and verify that no power is flowing through the outlet.

Next step is to prepare the space where you need to install your new cut-in electrical box. For that, trace the outline by putting the electrical box on the wall and cut it using a keyhole or drywall saw.

The wires that were used in old outlet can be used for new outlet also. Hence, stretch the wires via attic or via basement up to the new outlet location. In case the existing wire falls short for the purpose then you can add a new wire to this existing wire so that it can easily reach at the desired location.

Install your cut-in electrical box at the place prepared for it. Properly tighten the two Phillips head screws, provided at the corner side. After setting up the electrical box, bring out the wires from wire feed to do the connections.

While connecting the wires to the outlet, always keep one thing in mind that you should always connect the black wire to copper or darker (hot) screw and white to silver or lighter (neutral) screw. Always connect the ground wire to green screw. Use screw driver to tighten the screw that attach the outlet to the electrical box and finally cover it with the cover plate.

Screw the blank plate into the old electrical box using the supplied flat head screws and check by switching on the power supply. If the new outlet is working fine, your work is successfully done.

Different safety measures being used in electrical appliances nowadays have made the users careless in handling them. And thus, often fall prey to the faulty gadgets. GFCI is such a reliable electric device which safeguards us from electrocutions. This device, if finds any variation in the current flowing from the source and returning to it, it will immediately shut down the power.

National Electric Code has passed a law to install the GFCI at every homes for the safety. GFCI has gained a lot of popularity overtime. Because in previous times, these were used only at outlets near water. Today, we find them at all the places like bathroom, kitchen, basement, garage, and outdoor circuits.

Furthermore, today’s market posses three types of GFCI outlets that is receptacle type, circuit breaker type and the portable type.

Let us first discuss about the receptacle type. It is the most common type of the GFCI outlet and looks similar to the ordinary electrical switch outlet. It consists of two small buttons marked test and reset. As soon as the test button is pressed, GFCI trips and disconnect the power to anything plugged into the receptacle. These are found throughout the house.

Instead of having multiple receptacle GFCI outlets, people install single circuit breaker type GFCI at the main panel of the house. Also, these perform the dual function. Firstly, they prevent the appliances from blowing off by shutting down the power. Next, the save the appliances in an event of short circuit or overload conditions. These are installed at the main circuit board of the home.

Cases where permanent GFCI are not practical, portable GFCI are used. Portable GFCI are also of two types. In first type all the GFCI circuitry is placed in a plastic enclosure with plug blades at the back and the receptacle slots in the front. This type of portable GFCI are first plugged in an ordinary electrical outlet and then, the device to be protected is plugged in the receptacle of the GFCI.

One more type of portable GFCI are available in the market that consists of an extension cord attached with the GFCI. This look like an adapter where the plug is connected to the adapter and not to the protected device.

The installation of GFCI must be taken care of by a trained electrician and a periodical inspection of this installation may be carried out for its efficient and flawless service.

As water saving has become a major concern nationally, there should be an immediate reduction in the usage of water, especially in toilets. This is because toilets accounts for 30% water usage. And if you want to preserve water by using it properly, dual flush toilets is a way out.

Dual Flush Toilet is basically a toilet design that helps conserve water. Reports indicate, Dual flush toilets reduce water consumption up to 67% as compared to conventional toilets. Laws should be passed ensuring the installation of modern systems in every home. Its the most essential step for at least those countries that are facing hard due to water shortage.

This technique is based on the fact that liquid waste do not require as much water as solid waste do and so it makes no sense to use a whole tank of water for liquid waste. Such toilets combine water conservation and efficiency and are generally available in push button and lever operated models.

Dual flush system has become incredibly popular in various countries. Using this system we are saving water as well as money. They are available in large variety that provides your toilet a luxurious look.

You must be thinking, why going for a new system if the old one is perfectly alright. But dual flush toilet is a great invention that facilitates you to convert your old toilets into this incredible device by little efforts and money.

The conversion technique involves drilling of a hole at the top of the tank and a button mechanism is inserted. It consists of two buttons and the user can press the button accordingly. User can push smaller button for half flush and larger button for full flush. These buttons select the appropriate portion of the flush.

The added advantage to this is its simple steps of finding faults. If your flush gets operated without even touched by anyone, just ensure the flush balls are not loose. If your toilet flush doesn’t work properly, just check the water level of the tank.

Since the system is quite elaborate and complex, thus includes higher amount at the time of its installation. This feature of this water saving unit limits its use.

You can gratify the look of your bathroom by installing a premium quality pedestal sink. They offer you a large range of colors, models and sizes that suits other accessories of the bathroom and the home as well. These sink designs are ideally meant for less space bathrooms as they consume a very little space.

At times, when you need to remodel your bathroom, pedestal sinks are easy to remove. The only thing that is needed to carry out the dis-assembly of the sink is a little patience and an assistant. Here are some very important instructions one should follow while removing the pedestal sink.

To start with, cut down the water supply to the sink. Either turn off the shut- off valve or restrict the water supply to the home. In order to hold the drain water of the faucet, put the bucket or the container below the sink plumbing.

Use the hacksaw to cut down the copper pipe if there is no shut off valve. Otherwise, you can do with just dis- joining the sink and the valve.

All the plumbing fittings to the sink should be disconnected. Here, the important step is to detach the trap of the sink from the sink drain. So, make sure that you unfasten the screws joining the trap and the drain. Take the help of the channel lock pliers as these are suitably meant for this purpose.

Thereafter, using a utility knife, cut down the silicon caulk that is holding the sink on the wall. Decouple the joints between the pedestal and the sink and between the pedestal and the floor. Make sure, your assistant is holding the sink.

Remove the anchors with the help of the socket wrenches that secure the sink bowl to the wall. Make sure, the bowl is tightly gripped by the assistant. Furthermore, open the bolts with the socket wrench to detach the pedestal from the floor.

Once all the plumbing fittings are removed from the pedestal sink, you can now disconnect the sink drain with the rest of the home drainage system. Beside this, scrape away all the plumber’s putty and make the wall and the floor free from all the debris.

Scott Rodgers is a noted author who has been providing great guidance on plumbing works all over the country.

Most households prefer to conceal their electrical outlets and switches to complement the serenity of their home interiors. Hanging electrical cords and broken receptacles hurt the integrity of the walls and ceilings. Hence, such irregularities require an urgent addressing in order to restore the normality of the home decor.

One such electrical fixture that may appear unsightly at times is an electrical breaker box. An odd-colored box on the wall looks like an unwanted spot.

The simplest method to conceal your untidy breaker box makes use of paint. Observe the theme of your walls and paint the body of the breaker box accordingly. If you are somewhat creative and artistic then you can draw an attractive picture on the face of the box.

Alternatively, you can bring in a shadow box. Make sure that the size of the shadow box is larger than that of the breaker box such that it conceals the breaker box completely. In addition, you can place some objects or items in the decor section of the shadow box. This particular setup enhances the appeal of the room where the breaker box is installed.

Another type of shadow box is the one with a hinged door. The hinged door offers easy access to the underlying breaker box. However, the decor section is not involved in this setting. The back frame covers the box while the suspended door can be beautified with a picture frame. The picture is attached to the hinged door with the help of an adhesive spray or a regular gum.

Most households prefer to place a standard-sized picture or frame over their electrical breaker box.

Quite rarely, the breaker boxes are installed in the washrooms or laundry rooms. In such a scenario, a washboard can envelop your untidy breaker box.

However, scrub the surface of the breaker box well to remove stains and dark spots from it.
