Entry from: Paro, Bhutan Entry Title: “Weaving Through Bhutan” Entry: “Earlyish morning this morning, we met our guide and driver at 8am. Our ultimate destination today was back to Paro, but we had a number of stops before we got there. First was the Wangchue Dzong which was 21Km from our hotel in Punakha. This particular Dzong was built in 1638 and until last year, has never been renovated. The renovations for this Dzong started last year however it will take 4 years to complete and we could see no signs as yet of the new work. This Dzong boasts some of the oldest architecture in Bhutan, which was interesting to see. We walked through the main courtyard, always the government section of the Dzong and then through to the monastery at the back. It was cleaning time and all of the young monks were out with their twig brooms cleaning up the place. We went into the main temple which was a lot smaller than most of the other ones we had seen. We did one circle around the inside of the temple and then came back outside. As we walked back to the car we passed the workmen who were working on the restoration. These guys were amazing. They were recreating the woodwork for the Dzong and were cutting beams of wood by hand with small scythes. They would draw a straight line along the pieces of wood and then would …
