Entry from: Hoi An, Vietnam Entry Title: “Postscript” Entry: “Well, now that you have heard the real story we expect that you will doubt the veracity of anything that Steve and I report. However, nothing surprised us about Bryce’s version of events–the only disappointment is that while he can write a full narrative, only 3 sentences can be managed in his journal (and it is mostly about the food he did or didn’t like–same for Reid–sorry Miss R and Mrs. F). Anyway, just a few notes about Hoi An where we have spent the last 3 days. It is a pretty city (90000 pop.) with an area near the river comparable to seaside towns in Italy (if Italy were in Asia and all that). As you wander the riverfront, you might even hear some lovely classical piano music drowning out the cyclos. There are some well regarded cooking schools here but I doubt that any involve pizza or pasta so no use to us for the next decade. From the 17th to the 19th century, Hoi An was a major international trading post and particularly renowned for its silk and textiles. That part of the city’s heritage continues with over 200 dressmaker/tailor shops vying for your business. Some of the tailors cater to royalty while most are happy to survive on the budget of flash-packers like ourselves. Better to support this industry rather than the sweat …
