The Golden Age of Couture: Paris and London 1947-1957
Product DescriptionIn 1947, Christian Dior “New Look” was greeted with both shock and joy, the headlines all over the world. Accompanying the opening of the exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in September 2007, this lavish book focuses on Parisian and British couture 1947-1957, the decade Dior celebrated as the fashion of the “golden age.” The “New Look” symbolized a new femininity. The full skirts and hourglass silhouettes were considered highly decadent, synonymous with luxury and prosperity, in marked contrast to the austerity of the WWII years. Nevertheless, the “New Look” caught the public imagination and launched a period of remarkable creativity. The Golden Age of Couture features stunning gowns and exquisite tailoring from Dior as well as by designers such as Balenciaga, Balmain, Givenchy and, along with stunning photographs by artists such as Richard Avedon and Cecil Beaton. This beautifully designed book shows the skill and craftsmanship of haute couture with the inner workings of the exclusive design houses, and the inspiration behind some of the most famous styles of all time.

This wonderful book that examines, 2 December, 2007 in the New York Times Book Review, is already sold out, according to Amazon, but it was only published in September 2007. What on earth are the publishers think it draw only three months of it and went for sale before Christmas? It’s incredibly stupid of Abrams, the New York Times, and, frankly, is pushing to Amazon, which can not be bought for love or money. A unique corporate culture for all screw up Beteiligten.UPDATE 13th December 2007Beide Abrams and have emailed the New York Times to tell me, not the book out of print. And, why not show that Amazon on this page? There is nothing to suggest the publisher temporarily out of stock, or that the book will be available again. I would love to hear from anyone with information on the actual status of the book. Rating: 5.1
The cover of this book is very misleading. It is the only dress / photo in the entire book, which I liked. The title is very misleading. It is not about the Golden Age of Couture in Paris, its just as Christian Dior. I was hoping for a wide range of designers from Paris to see, including channel, completely absent from the book. All “original photos” of models, such as Cat Woman, look, you mean, cold, complacent expression. This woman Betty Davis clones are totally destroyed any hope for the production of the clothes they wear or elegant female. Rating: 5.1
