  1. Do not do combustion. You do not have the required equipment in a high school lab and it can be dangerous. Do the pH, do color, do conductivity, do color treatability by adding (not at the same time) acids or hydrogen peroxide or ferric chloride at pH 9. 5 to determine color stability. You can also look at the types of additives present by testing for sugars, carbonate, and sulfate.

    If you take dyed fabric, test the stability of the color to chlorine bleach, oxyclean, acids, etc.
