It has to do with the law. Produce set out in a store isn’t require to be individually labeled. (However I’m betting the boxes of produce the supermarket gets all are marked with where they’re from.)
But you’re not the only person concerned about this. Congress is forcing the USDA to implement the COOL plan, “country-of-origin labeling”, by September 30, 2008. It will require the origin of meat, fruit and vegetable products to be clearly labeled for consumers
I do not understand the big to do. Simply buy unblemished, uninjured fruits and vegetables and wash them before eating or peeling. That was standard practice a generation or two ago and still is in poorer nations where sanitation is not “the other guy’s responsibility” and people have not grown accustomed to depending on or blaming others for our own well being. Sorry, you asked for my opinion.
Good Point!!
I believe that supermarkets know where all of the produce is from that they are “putting out” for us to buy. But they just don’t make a habit of putting that information out there, I agree they always should.
My wife went grocery shopping yesterday, and there was a sign “Locally grown tomatoes”, with the current salmonella scare going on.
