Why Is All Of My Babies Clothes, Etc From China? And Where Can I Get Stuff Made In The Usa?

Ok – Long story short – I’m so sick of hearing about recalls . . . I don’t even want to get started on that conversation, but I’d like to know I can get my baby things in the USA or in Europe so that I can feel better about them? Why is everything in ?

  1. Well, not EVERYTHING is made in China, but a lot of stuff is for the reason that it is more cost effective for the companies-even if they are American companies-to outsource the work to China or other nations than it is to have it done here-both in terms of building factories, taxes and in terms of wages they must pay employees. Please also realize that while you might hear about a lot of recalled products, it is actually a VERY small percentage of what is imported from China that is recalled-it only seems like a lot because so many of our products come from there. Also, it is not always the fault of China-Mattel admitted fault in a recall of toys with lead paint last year.
You can find American made products, but you will have to look hard and pay dearly. Try local boutiques for the best luck (as far as finding them, not as far as prices go).
There are plenty of recalls on American products, as well. Peanut butter, Castlebury’s Hot Dog Chili, Lemon Juice are just a couple of things that come to mind that have occured recently. Like I said, it just seems as if more Chinese products are recalled because they supply us with so much, but those recalled items are only a small fraction of what we get overall.

  2. Because American corporations want cheap labor so they make everything in China and ship it back to us. Americans want their kids to go to college and become CEOs or big wig finance guys, not go into manufacturing jobs so manufacturing is becoming less and less popular in America, everyone wants the 5 houses and 4 cars, no one is content to just live a simple life anymore. However this mentality may begin to change since the middle class can’t live like they used to, we have to get used to a lower standard of living now.
Everything you will buy is made in China, clothes, toys, etc. – good luck finding made in the USA products, they are rare and expensive.
Edit: I was pleased to see that Britax car seats are made in the USA, they are expensive though but very good quality.

  3. Even if something says it was made in the US or wherever it may not have been made there, or at least not entirely.
A product is said to be “made” wherever the most money was spent on making it. So if a product was made in China for $0.99 and then brought here and packaged in a box that cost $1 to make and put the product in then it is “made in the US”
If you are determined to buy things made in US/UK you could try businesses run by stay-at-home-moms but even then you’d have to find ones that use materials not made in China.

  4. Everything is made in China because that’s where the cheapest labor is.
You can find baby clothes that are made in the USA, but they’ll cost more than the clothes made in China. Are you ready to pay more?

  5. Erika (Nina and Brady's Mom)

Like Shorty, I’ve searched for things made in countries other than china, and have found barely any. I just make sure to wash all the clothing and toys before the kids get it to help.

  6. lol… good luck finding anything anymore that isn’t made in some part of Asia. Practically nothing is made in the US anymore.
