Portable luminaries are one of the most common and versatile types of lighting we use today. Table lamps, floor lamps, desk lamps and torchieres are used in many residential applications.

In one fixture you can combine all three types of lighting; task, ambient and accent. And, you can unplug the luminaries, move it around the room, change shades, or change bulb types.

Unlike the permanent fixtures, you can use portable lights to direct light exactly where you need it. You can create any kind of environment and mood using different portable fixtures. Proper lighting level at work will increase your productivity and it will also save energy.

As these portable lights have a power cord, you need to have enough switching arrangements in a room to use it anywhere. For larger room, it can be a problem if you do not have a switch near a task area. Here, you might have to use a receptacle. But for this, you first have to consider the furniture arrangements of the room. Also, avoid running electrical cords under the carpets as this can lead to fire accidents.

Some portable lights are directional while others are omni directional. Table and floor lamps are omni directional as they have a shade covering them which emits some light downwards and rest of it into the room. These shades help in controlling the glare in a room and so are can be used for ambient lighting.

Another popular portable is the torchiere also used for ambient lighting. This product is a tall, open floor lamp that directs almost all of its light up to reflect off of the ceiling, filling the room with indirect light.

Most torchieres found in retail stores use halogen light bulbs. A number of manufacturers are now producing torchieres that use energy efficient Compact Fluorescent lamps. These CFL torchieres are a great way to efficiently produce ambient light for a room.

Mostly torcheries have halogen light bulbs. But now a days a more energy efficient option is coming up, which is compact florescent light bulbs. They are great for ambient lighting and you can save your money.
